Chapter 9 – Wren

I sat on the patio with my feet tucked up, my shoes discarded and the edge of the tiny wire chair digging into my bare heels. I tightened my arms around my legs, pressing my knees harder into my forehead and trying to curl into an even tighter ball as Sam swore again. The food she’d brought sat untouched between us.

“What were you thinking?” she demanded for at least the fourth time. Fury swirled around her like the battering winds of a category 5 hurricane.

As before, I remained silent. How would I possibly explain how gentle he’d been? How stupefying it had felt for someone else to notice my discomfort and be concerned—concerned enough to drop everything and help.

Besides, she had Nate. She knew what it was like to be touched by someone you craved. Knew what it did to one’s ability to think. It wasn’t like I’d meant to start kissing him in the middle of the foyer for god’s sake! It just happened.

“How could you possibly be so stupid?” Sam continued ranting. She wasn’t sitting but pacing across the small patio area, too worked up to be still. “You know him. You know how he is! He doesn’t want you, Wren.”

I knew that. I did. It had been a defining truth of my life for years. I still felt a sob lodge in my throat.

“You’re a conquest,” Sam spat. “A notch on his belt, that’s it. You can’t fall for this! You’re not this dumb!”

My chest ached with pressure of the wrenching, shuddering sobs I was trying frantically to hold back.

Why? Why did it have to be this way? Why couldn’t I have a mate who loved me, just like everyone else? I’d spent my whole life trying to do everything right! What horrible thing had I done in some previous life that I had to suffer like this now?

“Promise me,” Sam ordered. “Promise me that you will stay away from him.”

Resentment welled up. It wasn’t like I’d asked him to come! I’d never asked for any of this!

“Wren!” Sam snapped.

“The event …” I mumbled into my thighs. “I promised Sawyer—”

“You promised Sawyer you’d take an active role in the event planning,” Sam pushed back. “Not that you’d let his asshole brother paw at you. I know how this works, Wren. You can do it online. If you need information, you email him or call him or text him or something. No more having him come over—not when you’re here by yourself. It isn’t safe, and you know it! Now, promise me.”

“Yes,” I whispered. What else was there to say? I cleared my throat, the emotion still trying to claw its way out of me making the sound scratch rawly at my nerves. “Yes, I will.”
